CANNABIS COMPANIES HARVEST OF OH AND TRULIEVE REACH A SETTLEMENT PRIOR TO OHIO’S LAUNCH OF ADULT-USE CANNABIS SALES

CLEVELAND, OH – The vertically-integrated Harvest of OH operation (Harvest of Ohio, LLC, Harvest Grows, LLC and Harvest Processing, LLC) and Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (Trulieve) have reached an agreement resolving the active litigation between the companies. The parties have agreed upon an amicable separation that will allow each to continue growing in the ever-changing Ohio market, as adult-use is on the horizon.
In accordance with the settlement, Trulieve will acquire Harvest of Ohio, LLC, which will hold licenses for medical cannabis dispensaries in Columbus and Beavercreek. The Harvest of OH medical dispensary in Athens will be transferred to Ariane Kirkpatrick as 100% owner and will be rebranded under the name Mavuno, a Swahili word for harvest, yield, and provide. Separately, Harvest of OH will divest ownership of its production facility in Ironton to unrelated third parties. Other terms of the resolution remain confidential.

Harvest of OH was the result of a unique partnership that Kirkpatrick, 51% majority owner, formed with Harvest Health and Recreation, LLC., an Arizona-based multi-state operator which later was acquired by Trulieve. Since its formation, the Black woman-owned and family operated Harvest of OH, was one of the few vertically integrated Ohio cannabis operations, consisting of medical dispensaries located in Columbus, Athens, and Beavercreek, and cultivation and processing operations co-located in Ironton. With corporate headquarters based in Cleveland, Harvest of OH was a product of Kirkpatrick’s deep-rooted passion for community and economic development, social equity, and reversing the stigma surrounding cannabis.
Kirkpatrick states, “As the first Black and the first woman-owned cannabis company to achieve 100% vertical integration in the state of Ohio, the Harvest of OH team will forever be a part of cannabis history having broken barriers and paved the way for a diverse and inclusive workforce and supply chain.” Amonica Davis, Kirkpatrick’s sister and company’s COO adds, “Our dedication and commitment will continue to be the hallmark of Mavuno in Athens and beyond, as we enter the Ohio adult-use cannabis market.”

Your Cinco de Mayo Will Be a Hit With These 10 Tips!

Ready to level up your Cinco de Mayo celebration? As you gear up for the festivities, it’s a must to make sure you’re having a blast while staying safe. Join us as we dive into essential safety tips to make your holiday memorable, whether you’re lounging outdoors or hitting the dance floor all night long. But before we dive into some must-know safety tips, let’s take a quick moment to appreciate the significance of Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo, celebrated on May 5th, isn’t just about partying—it’s a special day that commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although it’s often confused with Mexican Independence Day (which is actually celebrated on September 16th), Cinco de Mayo has become a vibrant celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, especially here in the United States.

Now that we’ve brushed up on a bit of history, let’s make sure your Cinco de Mayo is one for the books—and that starts with these must-have tips:

1.) Consume responsibly:

Start with a low dose and gradually increase, especially when trying new products. Keep in mind that edibles can take up to two hours to take full effect! If you’re still a little new to cannabis, consider opting for products with lower THC levels.

2.) Designate a Driver:

If your Cinco de Mayo plans include a night out on the town, make sure you have a designated driver who will not consume cannabis or alcohol. To ensure you have someone, agree ahead of time who will be the driver so everyone gets home safely.

3.) Stay Hydrated:

Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day, especially in hot weather, by drinking plenty of water. Alternating between alcoholic beverages and water can also help prevent dehydration.

4.) Know Your Limits:

Pay attention to your body and take breaks as needed. If you start to feel overwhelmed, find a quiet and safe spot to relax and regroup. To avoid adverse effects, avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol or other substances.

5.) Keep Cannabis Secure:

When bringing cannabis products to an event, ensure they’re kept out of reach of children and pets. Use child-resistant packaging and store easily accessible items in a lockable container to keep every person (and pet) safe.

6.) Put Your Safety First:

Make sure to take proactive steps to keep yourself and those around you safe. Keep up with good hygiene habits like washing your hands regularly, and if you can’t find a sink, don’t forget to reach for the hand sanitizer!

7.) Use Sun Protection:

If you’re planning to spend your time outside, protect yourself from the sun using sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to ward off both UVA and UVB rays and reduce the risk of sunburn and skin damage. (Here’s a skin tip: remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours for maximum protection.)

8.) Watch Out for Allergies:

Nobody wants their holiday festivities spoiled by feeling under the weather. Make sure to label foods and offer alternatives for guests with food allergies or dietary restrictions. If you can’t provide alternatives, give guests a heads-up beforehand so they can come prepared with their own snacks!

9.) Wrap up the Green:

As the festivities wind down and it’s time to start cleaning, be sure to dispose of any leftover cannabis products properly. Check out local disposal guidelines to ensure everything gets thrown away safely and avoid any accidental ingestions.

10.) Seek Help if Needed:

If you’re experiencing any unpleasant side effects, don’t tough it out alone. Reach out for medical help if needed. And if you notice someone else showing concerning symptoms like a racing heart or confusion, don’t hesitate to call emergency services right away to make sure they get the care they need.

With these tips in mind, your Cinco de Mayo celebration is sure to be a hit, enjoyed responsibly with your loved ones and community. Who says you can’t have it all? From all of us at Mavuno, we wish you a celebration filled with joy, laughter, and good vibes!

Your Huntington’s IG Post Could Change a Life

As May blooms into full swing, it’s a perfect time to shed light on a condition that deserves attention: Huntington’s disease (HD). Let’s dive into what this qualifying condition is all about, explore the treatments available, and discover how each of us can play a part in spreading awareness.

Understanding Huntington’s Disease:

According to the Mayo Clinic, Huntington’s disease is a rare genetic condition gradually breaks down nerve cells in the brain. Think of it as an uninvited guest in your nervous system. Huntington’s disease has a wide range of effects on a person’s functional abilities, typically resulting in mobility, cognitive, and behavioral issuesAccording to the Mayo Clinic, Huntington’s disease is a rare genetic condition gradually breaks down nerve cells in the brain. Think of it as an uninvited guest in your nervous system. Huntington’s disease has a wide range of effects on a person’s functional abilities, typically resulting in mobility, cognitive, and behavioral issues. 1

Available Treatments:

While there is no cure for Huntington’s disease, there are ways to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for those affected. Medications may aid with movement difficulties and psychological symptoms, and techniques like physical therapy can work wonders in improving motor skills. Research into potential therapeutic treatments, such as gene therapies and medicines, also offers hope for the future.2
However, one new area of research in HD management is the possible role of medical cannabis. According to research, some chemicals present in cannabis, such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may have therapeutic benefits for people suffering from neurodegenerative illnesses like Huntington’s disease. CBD, in particular, has received attention for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, which may help ease symptoms of HD, such as uncontrollable movements. THC, on the other hand, may alleviate symptoms such as pain and muscular spasms.3

How Can We Make a difference?

  • Spread Information: Share facts about Huntington’s Disease on social media using hashtags like #HuntingtonsDiseaseAwareness and #Hungtingtonsdisease to raise visibility.
  • Support Research: Donate to organizations funding Huntington’s research to accelerate progress towards effective treatments.
  • Fundraising Events: Participate in charity walks or virtual fundraisers to support Huntington’s disease advocacy groups and nonprofits.
  • Educate Yourself: Learn about Huntington’s Disease and its impact on individuals and families to become a more informed advocate.

Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month is an opportunity to support those affected and raise awareness of this challenging condition. By learning, supporting research, and participating in initiatives, we can make a difference in the lives of those impacted by HD and contribute to the search for effective treatments.

What if Your Favorite TV Show Could Be a Medical Superhero?

Let’s talk about the power of storytelling, especially when it comes to shedding light on medical conditions like ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). While ALS might not always grab the headlines in popular media, showcasing fictional characters grappling with the disease can be a powerful tool for raising awareness. This ALS Awareness Month, we’re diving into a particular portrayal of ALS in NBC’s TV series “Chicago Med.”

Lydia may have been a small character on “Chicago Med,” but her plot had a lasting influence on fans. Lydia’s path after being diagnosed with a rare form of the qualifying condition, called “bulbar ALS,” mirrored the real-life obstacles that people with ALS face. Despite her limited screen time, Lydia’s story added depth to the show and offered viewers a glimpse into the challenges of living with ALS.

Through Lydia’s character, we witnessed the highs and lows of her journey. As her condition progressed, Lydia experienced changes in her speech and sudden emotional outbursts, both of which were linked to the degeneration of brain cells associated with ALS.

According to healthline, about 30,000 people across the United States are grappling with ALS.1 Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a rare condition that affects the nervous system, particularly the motor neurons that control muscle movement and breathing in the brain and spinal cord. Imagine facing challenges like struggling to chew and swallow, dealing with muscle cramps and twitches, or even feeling your speech falter. That’s the daily reality for many battling ALS.2

While Lydia’s storyline didn’t explicitly dive into it, “Chicago Med” subtly hinted at the evolving landscape of ALS treatment. Medical cannabis has emerged as a topic of interest in managing ALS symptoms such as muscle spasms and pain, and discussions about ALS in the media are able to raise awareness about potential alternative therapies.

Lydia’s journey allowed viewers to connect with the lived experience of ALS, encouraging empathy and understanding. As a community-based dispensary, we recognize the impact of these portrayals on fostering compassion and inclusion for people living with ALS.

The way ALS is shown in movies and TV isn’t just for people who already know about it. Sometimes, it can help those who might not even realize they have ALS. Seeing accurate and caring depictions on screen might make someone recognize symptoms they or their loved ones may be experiencing and search for medical advice. However, it’s crucial for media portrayals to be accurate and respectful. By ensuring authenticity in storytelling the media can play a vital role in educating and empowering individuals to recognize and address potential health concerns.

Fibromyalgia: Pain, Fatigue, and… Cannabis?

Have you ever had a day filled with exhaustion and mental fog? When you combine those with chronic pain, digestive issues, and muscle or joint stiffness, you get a sense of what it’s like to live with fibromyalgia. This May, we’re learning about what it’s like to live with this chronic condition, highlighting standard and alternative treatments, and investigating the possibilities of medical cannabis as a treatment option.

Understanding Fibromyalgia:

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), fibromyalgia is a “chronic (long-lasting) disorder that causes pain and tenderness throughout the body, as well as fatigue and trouble sleeping.” While scientists are still figuring out the exact cause, factors like genetics, infections, and trauma seem to play a role in its development. It is most common in middle-aged women; however, fibromyalgia can affect anyone. The symptoms that come with it can vary in intensity and make all aspects of daily life a struggle.1

What It's Like to Live with Fibromyalgia:

Living with fibromyalgia is a daily struggle with pain, exhaustion, and a host of other pesky symptoms that can have a significant impact on physical and mental well-being. Individuals with fibromyalgia experience several obstacles in managing their disease, ranging from irritation over inexplicable pain to tiredness from sleepless nights. 2  What’s tougher is that these challenges aren’t always visible from the outside, which can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration.

Traditional Treatments for Fibromyalgia:

When it comes to tackling fibromyalgia, traditional treatments often revolve around managing symptoms. This can include a mix of medications, physical therapy, exercise, and lifestyle tweaks. Pain relievers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants are common medications used to treat fibromyalgia, and they can aid with pain relief, sleep improvement, and generally improve the quality of life.3

The Potential of Medical Cannabis:

Medical cannabis is one alternative therapy that has been turning heads for its potential to manage fibromyalgia symptoms. Packed with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, it’s shown promise in relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and may even have neuroprotective effects. Research in “Cannabis for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review” suggests that cannabis could be a valuable tool in the fibromyalgia fight.4 However, as always, it’s essential to speak to your doctor to discover what’s best for you.

Conclusion:

Living with fibromyalgia can be a difficult road, but remember that you are not alone. We are here to help you every step of the way on your journey to wellness. Whether you’re looking into standard treatments, alternative therapies, or medical cannabis, our goal is to provide you with information, resources, and compassionate care during your visit with us.

Being a Tree-Lover is Easier Than You Thought

Arbor Day is just around the corner, and while we enjoy highlighting the trees we sell in-store, we want to add a special touch to the occasion by exploring how to plan meaningful Arbor Day activities. From planting a sapling to volunteering with a local conservation group, there are countless ways to get involved and make a positive impact. Join us in recognizing the beauty and value of trees on Arbor Day and every day after.

Why Arbor Day Matters:

Arbor Day is more than just tree planting; it’s a worldwide celebration of our trees and the vital role they play in our ecosystems. The World Economic Forum states that “trees play a vital role in regulating climate and weather patterns by absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2).” They also supply us with oxygen, purify the air we breathe, and provide important habitats for animals. And with initiatives like the US’s ambitious plan to plant a billion trees, there’s no shortage of ways we can pitch in and help our trees thrive!

Here are some ways you can jump into the action:

  • Plant a tree. Pick a spot in your local park or neighborhood and get your hands dirty! Before you get started, do a little research to find the perfect tree species and location, and make sure to follow proper planting techniques. Don’t hesitate to reach out to local authorities or environmental groups for some guidance.
  • Join a tree-planting event. Keep an eye out for upcoming tree-planting events in your community. These activities often offer tools and direction, as well as the chance to bond with other nature enthusiasts while working to improve green spaces.
  • Volunteer with a conservation group. Many conservation groups rely on volunteers for tree planting, path maintenance, and invasive species removal. Participate in local chapters of organizations such as the Arbor Day Foundation or your area’s Department of Natural Resources.
  • Educate others about trees. It’s easy to spread the word with social media. Use hashtags like #GrowATree to share educational resources, attend tree-related seminars or talks, and invite your friends to come with you.
  • Speak up for trees. Work with local legislators and community leaders to push for policies that protect and improve tree health. Whether it’s expanding urban forests or incorporating tree-friendly plans into city projects, your voice matters.
  • Support eco-friendly businesses and products. Purchase products and services from companies that are committed to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. This article explores the top five wood certificates for sustainability, including the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. You may see these certifications while shopping around!
  • Enjoy nature and share your love for trees. Take a breather and connect with nature by going on hikes, picnics, or leisurely walks around parks or natural areas. Use these opportunities to notice and appreciate the beauty of the trees around you.

Conclusion:

As Arbor Day approaches, we reflect on the enormous impact that trees have on our lives and the significance of protecting the environment. We’re so happy to have recently joined forces with Standard Farms and Ancient Roots during the first two weeks of April in our own tree planting effort. For every product sold during this partnership, both us and our partners contributed $1.00 per product ($.50 each). We are grateful for everyone’s support in contributing to such a meaningful cause– your Mavuno haul made a huge difference!

Where Did Stoner Culture Come From?

Words have a way of painting pictures in our thoughts. When you think of the word “tranquil,” you may imagine a peaceful pool. The word “lush” could bring up images of a gorgeous garden. But what about terms that describe entire communities?

One word stands out: “stoner.” Oxford Languages defines it as “a person who regularly takes drugs, especially marijuana.” When you hear it, you may envision someone relaxed, going with the flow, and appreciating cannabis. But how did this word come to be, and why does it refer to a particular lifestyle and culture?

The term “stoner” has been around for a while, but no one knows exactly where it comes from. Anecdotal online sources state that the concept of getting “stoned” on different drugs, not simply marijuana, first appeared in the early to mid-1900s. The slang phrase became widespread during the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s. According to Britannica, this was a period when individuals were experimenting with new ways of life, including the use of narcotics such as cannabis and rejecting traditional customs.

According to Peace: The Biography of a Symbol, living during this period was about coming together for change. People gathered in groups, sharing their dreams of harmony and unity. Streets were filled with activism as people marched for civil rights, the environment, and peace. It was a lively scene, with loud chanting and vibrant flags. In this climate, the peace sign became more than just a symbol; it was a call for people to take action for a better world. It was a time of hope and action, when ordinary citizens rose up for justice and peace.

Stoner culture emerged as these groups of cannabis enthusiasts connected through their common experiences and tastes. Icons such as Bob Marley, Cheech and Chong, and cinematic characters who embodied the stoner persona played an important role in establishing the culture, which emphasizes relaxation, creativity, and connecting among its many values.

However, stoner culture is not without its challenges. While some people praise cannabis as a recreational drug and push for its legalization, others are concerned about its potential health dangers, Schedule 1 status, and impact on society, particularly among younger generations. Stoner culture tropes and stigmas have become ingrained in critics’ minds as they have spread across mainstream media since the 1960s.

However, the typical stereotype of a stoner has begun to shift. California was the first to allow medicinal cannabis as a therapy option for specific qualifying diseases in 1996, and 40 of the 50 states have followed suit. Since then, a number of states have also moved to legalize recreational use. This change in legislation reflects shifting attitudes regarding cannabis and its potential benefits.

As a result, stoner culture is also changing. People from all areas of life are openly discussing their cannabis experiences, breaking down misconceptions and building understanding. Stoner culture, as a subset of cannabis, is constantly evolving and growing, much like the plants themselves.

In conclusion, the evolution of stoner culture demonstrates how language, society, and personal experiences connect. The term “stoner” has multiple meanings to different people, reflecting our constantly evolving culture. As cannabis laws and social attitudes change, stoner culture will remain a unique source of interest and conversation.

Could Cannabis Improve Handwriting in Parkinson’s?

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease and supporting those affected by it. As we prepare to show our support, we can’t help but wonder: What daily challenges do those with this condition face? Parkinson’s disease can impact various aspects of daily life, from chronic pain and difficulty breathing to motor control skills such as handwriting.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, individuals with Parkinson’s often experience changes in their handwriting, ranging from small writing to illegible scribbles, known as micrographia. These changes can make simple tasks like writing a grocery list or signing important documents challenging and frustrating.

While there are promising reports, there’s also a need for more scientific research on the effects of cannabis on handwriting in Parkinson’s. With further research in this area, we have the opportunity to discover new, valuable insights and ways to enhance the lives of individuals with Parkinson’s.

Current studies face their own set of challenges, like small sample sizes, inconsistent findings, and a lack of controlled clinical trials focusing on handwriting. We need more research to fully grasp the potential benefits and effects of using cannabis for improving handwriting and other motor symptoms in Parkinson’s.

While conclusive research is lacking, people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers can explore and combine unique strategies to improve handwriting. The Parkinson’s Foundation gives several suggestions to help manage micrographia, including a daily one-page writing exercise, time set aside to write while treatment methods are at their peak, and dictation software. It’s important for patients to talk to their healthcare providers about their symptoms and treatment options, including whether medical cannabis could be beneficial.

There is so much to gain from supporting research initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of those living with Parkinson’s. It’s not just about big breakthroughs; we need research on the little things too, like handwriting, that can be real challenges for people with Parkinson’s. By pushing for more research funding and backing initiatives focused on patients, we can move closer to ensuring that people with Parkinson’s have all the treatments and support they need to thrive.
